چکیده

Introduction The vertebral artery (VA) is important to posterior cerebral circulation. It arises from the superior surface of the first part of the subclavian artery medial to the scalenus anterior muscle. The vessel takes a vertical posterior course to enter into the transverse process of the sixth cervical vertebra. It continues through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae and after passing through the transverse foramen of the atlas, turns posteromedially on its posterior arch, pierces the atlantooccipital membrane and the dura mater, respectively and then enters the foramen magnum [1,2]. The segment of the VA from its origin at the subclavian artery to its entry into the respective transverse foramina is called the pretransverse or prevertebral segment [2]. Several researchers have reported anomalous origins of the VA such as from the aortic arch, between the left common carotid artery (LCCA) and left subclavian artery (LSA) or after LSA, from the thyrocervical trunk, from the brachiocephalic trunk (BT), from the common carotid artery, from the external carotid artery, from a common carotid trunk formed by LSA and left vertebral artery (LVA) [3–7]. Knowing the variation of the origin of VA and its prevertebral course is of great importance for head and neck surgery [8] and angiography [2] and vascular angiography.

A Case Report of Variant Origin of Left Vertebral Artery from Aortic Arch and its Embryological Explanation

Vertebral artery is the first branch of subclavian artery. It merges with the same artery of the opposite side to form basilar artery and becomes one of the important source of blood supply to the brain. Variation in the origin of left vertebral artery was found in 65 year old female during magnetic resonance angiography of the neck vessels. It originated from aortic arch and was longer as ...

A case of aberrant bilateral vertebral arteries orgin presenting with right VA dissection

Background: Knowledge of variations in the origin of vertebral artery (VA) is indispensable to vascular surgeons. Aberrant origin of vertebral artery on either side is an uncommon finding. There are unilateral and bilateral variability in VA origin. Case presentation: We present a case of vertebral artery dissection who was found to have bilateral VAs aberrant origin. The right VA took origin ...

Anatomical Variations of Vertebral Artery

Introduction: Vertebral arteries arise from the root of the neck as the first branches from the superior-posterior aspect of the subclavian arteries. They ascend the neck to enter the cranial cavity and supply blood to the brain. Methods: A total of 20 cadavers (in 10 years) were dissected for the study of variations in the origin of the vertebral artery. This study was conducte...

Anatomical Study of Subclavian Artery and Its Branches

Background: The branches of right and left subclavian arteries are important in conducting of blood to spinal cord, posterior cranial fossa, base of the neck, thyroid gland, wall of the thorax and abdomen. The routine use of internal thoracic artery as a conduit in coronary artery bypass grafting surgery requires appreciation of the anatomical variations of these vessels. So far, there is not a...
